About 12 years ago, Hill’s widow, Bena, decided to sell the house. For her, there was only one potential buyer.
“She knew me and my family, and she said, ‘Ted, I know you’ll keep up the yard,’ “ he said, so he and wife Karen happily took on the responsibility.
More than 60 years ago, Bena Hill had begun surrounding her family’s modern home with a garden which features many traditional Southern favorites, such as camellias, palms, Japanese plum, fig, bamboo, bridal veil, yellow rain tree, tung trees and bamboo. A small, bamboo shaded fish pond was also added, and 50-year-old, tall camellias form a natural fence around the back of the property.
“I could live out in the yard every day,” Karen said.
Two stained glass exterior windows recently made by Gulfport artist Karen Keber echo the period of the house. In the more temperate spring and fall months, the Riemanns enjoy the patio on their home’s flat roof, an original feature they appreciate.
